On Being a Client by Rose Ferguson
Like many practitioners, I first trained in IEMT to better support my clients. I had witnessed how quickly and gently it could reduce emotional intensity and transform long-held patterns. But as I deepened my understanding of the methodology, I began to recognise similar patterns within myself, subtle yet persistent emotional imprints that shaped my reactions and self-perception.
Before my training, I had never experienced IEMT as a client. My first hands-on experience came during my certification course and within the study group a few colleagues and I created.
As I began working with clients and observed the profound changes they experienced, I became convinced that IEMT was the modality I needed for my own personal growth and healing.
Engaging in my own IEMT work as a client proved unexpectedly illuminating. What began as professional curiosity evolved into deep personal insight. I discovered how much of my emotional landscape had been organised around outdated imprints. Through sessions focused on frustration, anger, guilt, shame, and difficult memories from challenging times, I found not only release but also clarity. I soon realised that the work I needed to do reached far deeper than I had imagined, and the transformation I experienced was far more profound than I
anticipated.
This process has reshaped how I show up as a therapist. It’s now easier to remain present, grounded, and compassionate, and to hold space for discomfort without rushing toward resolution. IEMT has reminded me that emotional change doesn’t always appear dramatic; Often, it’s the quiet reorganisation of the self that brings the deepest healing.
In many ways, IEMT holds up a mirror not only for our clients but also for us as practitioners. Doing our own work is optional, but I believe it establishes the ethical foundation and personal integrity essential to effective therapy.
